  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Heat shortening over low heat until melted; remove from heat.
  3. Mix in brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt; mix into brown sugar mixture.
  5. Spread into greased square pan 8x8x2 inches.Bake 25 minutes.
  6. Cut into squares while still warm. Enjoy!
  7. Variation 1. Mix 1/2 cup of chopped nuts into the batter.
  8. Variation 2. Sprinkle the batter with 1/2 cup of chocolate or butterscotch chips (or both) before baking.
  9. Variation 3. Drizzle with your favorite chocolate sauce after baking.
