  1. Set oven to 350° (set oven rack to second-lowest position).
  2. Grease a 9 x 9-inch baking pan.
  3. In a bowl cream the butter and sugar until light.
  4. Add in the egg and the cocoa/water mixture with vanilla; mix until combined.
  5. In a small bowl mix together the baking soda and 1/2 cup boiling water, then add in with the flour and baking powder; mix until combined and smooth.
  6. Transfer to prepared baking dish.
  7. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the cake tests done.
