  1. Mix thoroughly butter, powdered sugar, egg, and vanilla. Blend in baking soda, cream of tartar, and flour. Cover and chill for 2 to 3 hours.
  2. Heat oven to 375 degrees.
  3. Divide the dough in half, and roll each half of dough 3/16" inch thick on a lightly floured or cloth-covered board.
  4. Cut into desired shapes and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Decorate with colored sugar or candy sprinkles.
  5. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until light brown on the edges.
