Dr. Pat's Hot Toddy Cold Remedy

"Okay, so our family doctor suggested this instead of prescription cough syrup for relieving the cold symptoms of the ADULTS in our family (he of course, did NOT suggest it as a CURE). He says the whisky helps you sleep while the honey and lemon soothe your throat. I'm pretty sure it works, but in the end we really don't care because we love this warm drink when we aren't feeling well. Even sometimes when we are feeling well! UPDATE: Our beloved Dr. Pat passed away November 19,2010 at the age of 59 from Melanoma so now this recipe with all of it's great reviews is even more special to our family. We will miss you forever Pat!!!"

Questions & Replies

  1. It says have it hot, can it work once cooled and ice added. I do not like hot liquids? Do you take it at bedtime or when the cough is causing most trouble, do you just sip it or drink all at once?

Reviews

  1. A friend of mine swears by fireball (cinnamon) whiskey to knock out a bad cold. It's powerful stuff but in my opinion took the typical hot toddy up a notch! Not sure it really cures a cold but it sure makes it a more enjoyable experience. ;)

  2. You never heat honey in the microwave. It kills all the healing propertys of the honey. Add the honey to the hot mixture after it comes out of the nuke. Otherwise this is a good combination. Thank you!

  3. It relieved the sinus pressure in my head relatively fast, along with the chest congestion and runny nose. My nose is still stuffed up. DISCLAIMER: Be sure to blow on the Hot Toddy before consuming so you don't burn your tongue/mouth.

  4. Yum - very tasty. Instead of a slice of lemon - try a chunk of crystalized ginger. Great anti-oxidant.

  5. Great ratio of ingredients. I didn't have any lemon in the house but I had limes; half a lime of juice worked well. I used Jameson for the whiskey and probably put in a little more than I should have ;) It has relieved my chest cold symptoms for tonight and will help me get some good rest. Thank you and rest in peace, Dr. Pat!

Tweaks

  1. To improve on this remedy, you need a hat. Put the hat on the bedpost and get in bed. Now, drink these toddies until you see 2 hats!

  2. I put whiskey and honey in mug and ran tea through my Keurig then added lemon.

  3. I sliced a piece of fresh lemon, from lemon from our tree, stuck a couple of cloves in my lemon, boiled the water then poured the whiskey in my hot water.

  4. I used crown royal fresh squeezed lemon juice, opening up sinus as we speak

  5. I used Green Tea and Wild Turkey "American Honey" Whisky

I grew up in Tucson but moved to Colorado in 1989 and live in a household with my husband, Dad, daughter and 3-year old twin granddaughters. Our 8-year old grandson spends 2 nights a week with us. All of that adds up to often difficult menu ideas to met everyone's tastes. Zaar is very addicting and I love trying the recipes I find here. I like to find recipes of people that I see are still active on Zaar and love it when I hear back from the Chef after I review the recipe. Everytime someone reviews one of my recipes, I like to find one of theirs to make and review as quickly as possible. It's a way for me to find great chefs I don't know yet too! My husband has high blood sugar so we try to watch our carbs, but it is not easy because we love them so much! I was diagnosed with brain tumors in 2005 and so far have had 5 surgeries that have left my eyelid droopy. I hope to have a surgery that will correct that soon!! There is still one tumor they have not removed but my wonderful doctor James Garrity at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN says they will leave it alone until or if it ever causes problems!
