  • Add all the ingredients to a heavy-bottomed saucepan and stir well to dissolve the sugar completely.
  • Set the saucepan over medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to very low and simmer, stirring frequently, until thickened and caramelized, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  • Transfer to a clean glass jar and refrigerate. Will keep for 1-2 weeks.

  1. It's magic! I have been cooking for a very long time and not even once did it occur to me to make my own sweetened condensed milk to make Dulce de Leche. What a boon to have this recipe now. It's faster and cheaper to make (albeit more 'hands on') than boiling the can of purchased product and there is always milk and sugar in the house. Oh, I did add a pinch of salt at the end because who doesn't love salted caramel? Thanks so much for posting this! Made for Susie's World Tour,
