Easier-Than-Making-Tacos Taco Salad

"I've always loved tacos but I think the assembling part can be a pain, especially if I'm making mine and the kids' because they were too small to make their own. Once I had taco salad this way, I never made tacos again! (Salsa pictured in my photo is recipe #97428) I have found that squeezing some lime juice over the prepared salad makes it even better! YUM!!"

  1. Yum! This WAS easier than tacos, and I enjoyed it more. I served with baked Doritoes, which I definitely recommend. I also mixed the salsa and [light] sour cream to make a southwestern salad dressing. This will become a summer staple for us!

  2. Great taco salad. I used lean ground turkey instead of ground beef, but otherwise followed the recipe.

  3. This taco salad is delicious and easy. It is perfect on warm nights. Made as written except put into regular bowls and omitted black olives as my family doesn't like them. It was so healthy and fresh. The tortilla chips give it a crunch and a salty balance to the sweet tomatoes. I mixed the salsa and the sour cream to make a southwestern salsa like a previous reviewer. So good. Everyone ate it up. We love taco salad. Definitely adjust the toppings to what you like but go for it. Thanks Marg for posting! Enjoy! ChefDLH

Tweaks

  1. Meat preparation: We pan brown the meat. First we add oil (olive in our case) to a hot pan throw in ½ chopped red onion. Cook until beginning to turn translucent then we throw in the ground beef and a diced clove of garlic, using an implement of some sort to get the beef into the smallest pieces possible. Cook until beef begins to turn brown, not grey. As Carla Hall has said, "The flavor is in the brown". Then we clear a spot in the pan, throw in the spices, cooking for 15 seconds to bring out the oils/scent, and then stir it together with the meat. We use all the other ingredients to build salad adding chopped green onion and jalapeño to personal taste.

  3. I made a vegetarian version with kidney beans and broiled tortilla strips instead of the chips. It was very well received, thanks for the recipe!

  5. Just made these last night for dinner. Everyone in my family loved them. I used chicken in place of hamburger since thats what we had left over.
