Easy Microwave Bacon

"Disclaimer: Based on a review, I DO NOT recommend using a paper plate. This is a quick and easy way to get nice crispy/chewy bacon in the microwave. I've been making it this way for years, and thought I would share. This method sure beats the spattered grease mess all over the stove top from pan frying, or having to use the oven in the hot summertime. Enjoy! NOTE: Cooking times will vary according to your microwave, the type of bacon, and your desired level of crispness/ chewiness, so feel free to adjust cooking times as necessary. If this is the first time you use my method, be sure to closely monitor the process and check often."

directions

  • Note: I DO NOT recommend a paper plate due to danger of fire.
  • On a microwave-safe dish (such as a Corelle dinner plate/or 8 x 10-inch Pyrex glass baking dish), lay down 2 sheets (double layer) white paper towels. Place 6 thick slices bacon on the paper towels (not overlapping each other). Cover the bacon slices with 1 sheet of white paper towel.
  • Microwave on high for 5 to 6* minutes.
  • Rotate dish and microwave on high for about 5 to 6* minutes more (*note: microwave ovens vary, so cooking times may vary; time is for my microwave), or until done to your liking (I like mine crisp). Be careful not to burn the bacon.
  • Remove from microwave. Your bacon is ready!
  • NOTE: You can use regular slice bacon as well, just reduce cooking time by a minute or two.

Questions & Replies

  1. Don't recommend paper plates due to risk of fire? What about paper towels? Somehow they aren't a risk? Neither are a risk. Paper doesn't burn until 451 degrees F. And even then it requies some prolonged exposure.

  2. What heat time do I set a 1000 watt microwave for real thick bacon?

Reviews

  1. That's a great way to cook bive or six slices, but if you need to cook more there's a better way. There's a new product, it's called the Bacon Pro. Granted, I am biased, since I’m the inventor, but it cooks more than 20 slices of bacon all at once in the microwave. It is quick, clean, easy, and healthier. The fat drips away. With this device, you'll be able to cook enough bacon to prepare BLTs this summer. This is not some cheap drug store bacon cooker. It is the best bacon cooker ever made. You will never go back to cooking bacon in the oven or on the stove-top. Check it out at http://www.baconpro.com and watch the video about how it works.

  2. I've been doing this for some time, have never had a problem. I use a good quality paper plate and paper towels, but never more than about four slices. Timing depends on the type of bacon, how you like it done and power of your microwave. You have to experiment with this. When I open a new package of bacon, I start with three slices for two minutes, and adjust from there. Even the same brand and thickness can change from package to package. You can always add time, cannot take it back, so start conservatively. I like the easy clean up and I find the bacon to my liking.

  3. i didnt cook it as long and it was still hardly edible, sucks !!!

  4. This my favorite way to cook bacon--so fast and no mess! Also frees up the stove for making other parts of a meal (and one less pan to wash). I shorten the cook time to 3-4 minutes since I like my bacon soft and chewy.

  5. Rule of thumb: 1 minute per slice and no more than 5-6 slices at a time.

Tweaks

  1. Try parchment paper on the bottom, keeps all oil/grease from cookware --no mess cleanup.

  2. I used 8 pieces of bacon, so of course it needed more time. As stated by someone else times vary due to the type of microwave you have. I did change the wax paper & paper towel halfway through the cooking time. My over all opinion- I like this recipe and would recommend this way to cook bacon.

  3. Listen for the pops! Once the bacon is done popping then it’s probbaly done. Depending on how crispy you like it.

Married to my sweetheart for almost forty years and we have two wonderful children who are grown and have flown the coop. Also, we have been blessed with a wonderful son-in-law and beautiful daughter-in-law, plus FIVE grandchildren: two beautiful granddaughters ages five and eight, and three sweet adorable little grandsons ages 2 months, 2 years and 3 years. My husband and I share a combination of English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Dutch, Swiss, Polish, Austrian, German and French heritage, and our son-in-law and daughter-in-law are both Hispanic. We've traveled extensively to many countries abroad (we lived in Germany), and have traveled and lived in several states here in the U.S.A. Many of the recipes I post here are influenced by our combined heritage or from our travels, or they are old family favorites that I want to share with you. I hope you enjoy! Have been to culinary school with many years of cooking (mostly for my family) under my belt, so know my way around a kitchen. And I'm very lucky to have the best sous chef in the world, dddddh! One of my favorite chefs of all time is Jacques Pepin! I have several of his cookbooks, and enjoy watching his television cooking show Fast Food My Way. Another top favorite is Julia Child (of course!). A few other chefs I read/enjoy watching on t.v. are: Giada At Home, Ina Garten's The Barefoot Contessa, Nigella Lawson's Nigella Bites, and Patti's Mexican Kitchen, and many more. On my bucket list is dining at Thomas Keller's establishment The French Laundry in Napa Valley, California... as well as Alice Waters' Chez Panisse in Berkeley, and the James Beard award winning Tartine Bakery and Cafe in San Francisco. One day!! Hobbies/Interests: Decorating with fresh flowers and herbs from the garden is my passion, and brings me deep joy! It's really hard to beat!! I love connecting with others who enjoy the same. Gardening, decorating, sewing, music, dancing, film, and reading are also up there. Spending quality time with my grandchildren, family, and friends (and cooking holiday meals!). Currently, a newfound passion has been so richly rewarding for me: genealogical research. I heart ancestry dot com. And last but certainly not least, I absolutely LOVE cats--we have two half-Siamese fur babies (cats) that allow us to live here!! A Note of Thanks~ I try to personally thank everyone who kindly makes and reviews my recipes, but sometimes I am busy, late, or may forget. Please know that I am always humbled that you would try one of my recipes, and I enjoy reading the reviews and seeing all the pretty photographs. Thanks so much!
