"So easy and tasty. Throw the turkey chili all together the night before, turn it on in the morning and come home to a wonderful aroma. Serve with toast and a crisp green salad."

Questions & Replies

  1. Can I substitute sausage meat for the turkey?

  2. I just put all the ingredients in the slow cooker, and noticed it say cook on "HIGH" for 6-8 hours- is this a typo? I would think we cook on "LOW" for 6-8 hours? Please advise as I need to leave for work , thank you !!!!

  1. I am rating this a 5-star because it is fast, easy, healthy and economical. Honestly I thought it was a little bland but It makes a good base recipe, though, so I added some minced garlic, cayenne, hot sauce, worcester, green pepper and served it with lots of topping choices like avocado, cilantro, black olives, cheddar cheese, a squeeze of fresh lime, crushed tostito chips and sour cream. Problem solved, everyone gave it a big thumbs up. Next time I will sub cannellini beans for the chick peas (just a personal preference of texture). Anyway, it's a keeper and thanks for posting it!

  2. Easy recipe, but needed a bit more flavor. I will add garlic, paprika, and cumin next time.

  3. This is a fantastic recipe. In order to give it more dimension and add a bit more spice I also add: 1 tbsp minced garlic, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, 1/2 tsp ground cumin, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp ground black pepper and 1 can of original ro-tel (drained). I also only use 1 tbsp of the chili powder. We serve it with sour cream, oyster crackers, shredded cheese and jarred jalapeños, and everyone that has tried it offers two thumbs up!!

  4. I made this in a dutch oven and now I can't wait to try it in the crockpot. I omitted the chickpeas, and pureed some of the kidney beans to make the chili thicker. delicious and froze beautifullyl

  5. This is an absolutely WONDERFUL recipe, so easy to make and so very tasty. I have made it several times and it is always delicious. For my diced tomatoes I used ones that were seasoned with basil, oregano, and garlic. As a personal preference I used no salt tomato sauce. One tablespoon of chili powder and a teaspoon of cumin worked well for spices. I believe 5-6 hours on high does it for cooking. My wife and I always love the leftovers the next day. This has become a big favorite of ours. Thanks Derf!!

Tweaks

  1. I doubled the turkey to 2 lbs, instead of chick peas used white kidney beans, used garlic diced tomatoes instead of plain and instead of cumin added a package of chili seasoning mix. Delish!

  2. Mix of ancho, chipotle, ground dried chilis all beat basic chili powder. Fresh poblanos and jalapenos instead of canned add amazing freshness and heat. I add in last couple of hours, but could be added at beginning. This recipe is a guideline to get creative!

  3. Add 1 teaspoon of: cumin, smoke paprika and garlic powder Only 1 tablespoon of chili powder delete 1 can of chilies Add 1 can tomato paste Add 1 can RO-TEL delete 1 can tomato sauce

  4. Easy recipe, but needed a bit more flavor. I will add garlic, paprika, and cumin next time.

  5. Added 1 tsp. cumin, 1/4 C thinly sliced carrots for sweetness. Substituted 1 can of S&W diced tomatoes with garlic and sweet basil for the plan diced tomatoes. Added a sprinkle of cinnamon. Will add some corn niblets within last hour for color.
