Edible Play Dough - Safe for Kids With Peanut Allergies!

"This recipe comes from one of my favorite cookbooks,"Dining on a Dime" by Tawra Kellam. I brought this dough, along with lots of kid safe kitchen utensils, to my daughter's daycare. The kids had an absolute ball with it! This recipe yields a dough similar in texture to real play dough, unlike the peanut butter dough recipes I have tried. Food color paste seems to give a brighter, truer shade than liquid but use whatever you have. Enjoy!"

  1. Excellent! Made this recipe with a group of children and they enjoyed every minute. I made several colors and used flavored extracts to give each color a matching flavor and scent.

  2. Great recipe for toddlers with allergies!!! It does take a lot of powdered sugar to get the right texture. Easy enough to make that kids could help. Will definitely make again.

  3. I followed just as written with the exception of guessing on the amount of powdered sugar I used 1/2 of a 2 lbs bag. and I used shortning since I only had frozen butter on hand. It melted after a little while of play, and the taste wasn't all that great. But it was great for a 2 yo that likes to eat everything that she plays with. It was really quite good dough other then the melting part and that was after several hours out, and playing with it. A great idea and change of pace.

  4. I halved this recipe and followed carefully, thinking it would make a cute secret santa gift, and ended up with a sticky mess. I tried adding more sugar, then even flour, but the closest to play-dough I got was slime. As my last resort I made a batch of brownies and used it as an icing so I wouldn't have to waste it. It made a tasty, festive icing at least!

  5. This is a FABULOUS recipe! I made this and took it when I went babysitting yesterday and the kids LOVED it. Not only was it nut free (I have a nut allergy), but it was also not made with flour (as I have a wheat allergy). Usually I have to get my mom to make play dough for me to take babysitting and then I have to get the children to help me clean up the mess afterwards. But this time I got to play along! Thank you for the GREAT recipe Paula. This will be used for years and years, especially some day when I have children of my own! Thanks for sharing!

Let's see.....I am a chauffeur mediator personal chef private nurse psychiatrist housekeeper cheerleader tutor AND personal shopper wrapped up in one tired, overweight package. Yep, I'm a stay-at-home mom. And anyone who interjects a "just" or an "only" into that descprition is likely to get my patented "up yours" look cast in their direction. heheh. It is my experience that SAHMs do just about everything BUT stay at home. I live in a little Western Kentucky town that I didn't even know existed until I met the red-headed redneck whom would eventually become my husband and father of my adorably rotten kids. Although unintentional, it would seem that I collect cookbooks. I have an entire kitchen cabinet completely full of them. Plus they are stuffed in boxes under the bed, on a bookshelf in the living room, and in storage. I especially love to find older cookbooks. The only thing better than an old cookbook, is an old cookbook with notes jotted on in the margin or on scraps of yellowed paper. I love the thought that someone once lovingly prepared meals for a treasured family using that cookbook. Pet peeves: Shopping carts left in parking lots- especially parking lots with slots for those carts. If you do this, don't worry, I won't hurl curses or produce at you. I'll simply shoot you a dirty look, sigh, then take your cart to the designated slot on my way to the store. LOL
