Fastnachts (German Doughnuts)

"This is a traditional German recipe, usually made on Shrove Tuesday to use up the lard before Lent begins. Don't worry, you can fry them in vegetable oil instead of lard! Either way, they're delicious!"

  1. Kree, you did good. Very, Very good! This is almost identical to the recipe I'm used to. I didn't personally get to taste one as this was made while I had guests over who decended on these like vultures. They told me it was delicious and asked if I had any more. Oh well. I guess I will have to make another batch for just myself ;-) I've made these at my home in Europe, and those were excellent. This recipe is very similar, so I can safely say I know I would have given this a 5 star for standing ovation anyway.

  2. If you want to make them traditional, they are not round but cut into squares, that is the way they do it in Southeast PA in PA Dutch country.

  3. Only giving this 3 stars. While the donuts were delicious, they were far from being a fastnacht. I would make these again. Everyone loved them, but it just wasn't what we were needing them to be.

  4. This is a fabulous recipe! The dough was lovely to work with and the result is lovely clouds of donuts. Very soft and delicious! Thank you for sharing,

I'm a real estate agent in the lovely city of Rochester, New York. That's not what I expected to do with my life. I got my bachelor's in psychology, my masters in literacy education, and I taught high school special education for two years. Then I discovered that helping people find the homes of their dreams was my real passion. I've been doing it for over two years now and still absolutely love my career. Other than that, I have a very spoiled Border Collie mix named Bear that I adopted from a local shelter in spring '08. He's gorgeous and fun and brings me great joy. Now if only I could find a man like that... LOL!
