Fee's Special Kitty Cat Renal/Kidney/Diabetes Diet

"My cat, Fee, is 22 years old(!), blind and has kidney disease, but his quality of life is still great thanks to daily subcutaneous fluids, a special diet, and daily supplements that lower his BUN and creatinine. For a change of pace from Fee's usual (costly) prescription diet, I occasionally make this for him. Diabetics need fiber and kidney kitties need to limit protein. The inclusion of brown rice addresses these issues. The ingredients as given are minced, but I drop everything into my Magic Bullet yielding the consistency of pate. You can freeze portions, too - handy! Time estimate includes the mixing of all ingredients, cooked and otherwise, and the final quick cook of the mixture that includes the eggs. <<<< UPDATE >>>> I just wanted to mention that Fee is 24 years old now, which is roughly 113 in human years!"

ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 29.58 ml cooked green beans, finely minced
  • 9.85 ml finely minced carrots (if you substitute other vegetables, avoid those with a higher natural sugar content)
  • 29.58 ml baked chicken breasts, minced (no skin)
  • 157.80 ml cooked and cooled brown rice (unrefined, wild rice is good)
  • 14.79-29.58 ml olive oil (according to how moist your cat prefers his or her food. Olive oil is good for preventing hair balls)

directions

  • Mix all of the ingredients thoroughly. The rice must be mixed in well because smart cats (which ones AREN'T?) are liable to retrieve all that ISN'T rice from the dish, the clever little furballs --.
  • Cook in a medium skillet over low heat, stirring and chopping constantly, until the egg is at least soft-set but done.
  • Refrigerate or freeze in air-tight containers (Tupperware, Rubbermaid, Ziploc). Use the refrigerated portions within 36 hours.

Questions & Replies

  1. My kitty Lucky has been pretty sick since I got him. He was abandoned at 2 weeks with his sister Mimi. I bottle fed them formula at first. We joke about Mimi stealing everything from Lucky in the womb because she is the healthiest most active cat I've ever owned. I am an English teacher in Mexico. Vet care here is hit or miss and there is no quality cat food. I finally found a vet who did blood work and determined Lucky to have kidney failure. The vet couldn't say if it was acute or congenital and whether or not he would recover but regardless, Lucky is 8 months old and has good and bad days. He actually had about 3 good months and then got really sick. He had a fever and the vet gave him a naproxyn/paracetamol suppository. I looked it up and found out it is toxic for cats. There were some miscalculations on medications for him as well. Luckily I caught them and didn't give Lucky the medication. Also, can you believe the main cat food choice here is Whiskas? It's been discontinued in the US. I made a decision a few days ago to try a natural diet for Lucky. It really is our last hope. He is severely constipated right now and the laxative we tried caused leakage but no results and a lot of blood. His abdomen filled up with fluid last week and we thought we might have to put him down but he's recovering. I feel like he became sick again when he received the last vaccination. He's just now recovering. I hope so anyway. I appreciate this diet. I made a batch today and he loved it. He is actually in a food coma right now and I'm so grateful because he's extremely picky. I don't anticipate giving him Sub Q fluids, as I don't know what to give him and the correct method. Would you be able to educate me on that? What type of IV fluid would I use and size of needle? I know it goes between the shoulder blades. I don't have any other choice here other than to be my cat's doctor. I do have a medical background but not as a vet. Cats are not even valued in Mexico. In fact, most people hate them and look at me as if I'm crazy for having them in my house and treating them like my babies. How do I know when he needs fluids and how often? Also, what types of supplements should I use in addition to this diet? How many times a day should I feed him? He is severely under weight so I've been feeding on demand. Is that safe? Thank you and sorry for all of the questions! p.s. I'm posting a picture of Lucky and Mimi. Lucky is on the right.

  2. Can this recipe be fed to all cats?

  3. Why add rice to the diet? I have read that cats with renal disease... in fact cats in general do best without grains of any kind in their meals. Please explain. Thanks in advance for your answer.

  4. Hi, thank you so much for sharing my 18 yr. old female (Queenie) is just entering that stage where she has to eat a special diet for her kidneys. The vet prescribed Royal Canine (Not a fan of the ingredients). Is this recipe something that I can feed her instead of Royal Canine? Thanks

  5. Hi I have a 15-year-old kitty that was just diagnosed with Stage 3 renal disease. She is playful and spry, so the diagnosis caught us off guard. Snuggles has an additional issue as she is also allergic to several foods, including chicken and possibly fish. Is it a possibility to substitute pork or lamb for the chicken? I am also unsure whether eggs would have the same effect as chicken options. Any thoughts. Thanks Kelly

  1. Haven't tried it yet but again, kudos for giving options for special diet kitties as well, would likely make a good recipie if your cat was a little under the weather with an upset tummy etc!

  2. I haven't tried this recipe but I wanted to send out kudos`to a chef adapting recipes to feed a special needs pet!!

  3. The recipe looks good, but it needs some additions. Cats need taurine. It is an essential amino acid that is vital for eyesight and heart function. This recipe needs taurine supplement added to it. Cats also need calcium. The book "Whole Health for Happy Cats" gives excellent instruction on dosages for these vital nutrients.

  4. I have a 21 year old male cat with depleting kidney function. He is on fluids twice per week and on special food. Within the passed year he has chosen to just lick the top layer and not consume the rest. But he loves human food. This recipe is really great, he eats every single bite, and I am even able mix in his prescription wet food. Thanks so much, very helpful.
