Flubber

"There are other recipes for Flubber here, but this is the one I always use. From the Children's Museum of Houston. Great to do with the kids. Educational, too: "Combining the borax and glue with water causes a chemical reaction that forms a new compound with its own unique characteristics. Notice how the flubber can be molded and then returned to its original shape unlike glue, which becomes solid, or the powdery borax." I always buy school glue on sale before school starts and save it to make this through the year. I have never had this stain and it is easier to clean up than playdoh. Most fun at room temperature. Would be great as a party favor."

directions

  • Put the borax in 1/3 c of warm water and stir until dissolved. Then add several large squirts of food coloring and set aside.
  • Pour the remaining 2 cups of water into a container and add the 2 cups of school glue. Stir until dissolved.
  • Add the borax solution to the glue solution.
  • Mix with your hands. Remove all jewelry! Do not use a spoon! This is really fun.
  • It takes approximately 5 minutes for all of the water to be absorbed and for the mixture to reach the right consistency. Knead firmly to encourage suspension of the glue particles.
  • Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It should last two weeks or more.

  2. This is all fine and dandy, just remember that borax can be toxic if ingested. Read the box.

  3. This has been a huge hit at out house this summer! I lost my recipe and this one seemed somewhat familiar. It is excellent!!! My husband and his colleauges at work have been very busy for the last few weeks so I had him bring a batch in as stress balls..it is very popular there now as well!!!! I find that if you stir the borax solution for ever it never dissolves so I just make sure to do it for at least 5-10 minutes and it doesn't go grainy for me at all. Be careful because allthough it hasn't stained anything yet it is glue and will dry like a rock! Thanks for a very fun recipe to help w/ the summer boredomes!!!
