  1. Sauté onions in oil and butter on low for 30 minutes.
  2. Simmer broth and wine for 30 minutes.
  3. Add onions to broth mixture.
  4. Toast 4-6 slices French bread. Butter and sprinkle with garlic powder. Break toast into pieces and place in onion soup bowl.
  5. Ladle the soup in the bowls.
  6. Cover with shredded cheese. Broil until brown.
