French Sodas (Blueberry, Strawberry or Raspberry)

"An Italian soda is a refreshing combination of flavored syrup and sparkling water mixed in a cup of ice. The addition of half-and-half turns an Italian soda into a cremosa/creamosa or French soda. Don't use milk because it will separate. If you've ever purchased either an Italian or French soda, you know how expensive they can be. Make your own!"

  • Boil the sugar and water until it begins to dissolve. Add the berries and simmer for an additional 15-20 minutes. The berries will turn to mush and the liquid will thicken.
  • Strain over a bowl keeping the juice and discarding the fruit. Cool completely and refrigerate until ready to use.
  • To make a French Soda: Fill a tall glass with crushed ice. Pour over 1/4 part of the berry syrup. Pour over with sparkling water. Add a splash of half-and-half (or to taste). Serve with as straw which is used to gently stir the mixture together.

  1. This is so yummy. I made it with fresh rasberries. For the 1/4 part, I used 1 ounce of the syrup. DH said he already had that when he went in France. It was for breakfast. Thanks Gailann :) Made for ZWT8 for Diners, Winers and Chives.

  2. Very refreshing after a hard day in the garden! I did the strawberry version, using frozen berries, but looking forward to trying it with fresh raspberries during the season. Easy to make and very tasty!

  4. So good. I used Frozen Blueberries and it turned out great. Making a raspberry one right now. I used heavy cream instead of half and half and it was amazing.

  5. Gailann, I am in heaven, love homemade sodas and this one is wonderful. I choose to make the raspberry version using fresh berries from my backyard. This was so good, quick and easy. This bubbly drink had a great raspberry flavor that was mellowed by the cream. Made exactly as written, wouldn't change a thing. Thanks for sharing this delicious treat, which I have enjoyed 3 times today. Made for ZWT8 - France.
