  • While preparing the dipping process for the tomatoes, heat oil and bacon drippings in a large pot over medium heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees.
  • You will need a slotted spoon to drop the tomatoes into the hot oil.
  • De-core and cut the ends off the green tomatoes.
  • Slice tomatoes into 1/2 inch thickness and set aside in a medium-sized bowl.
  • In a small bowl, set aside only 1 1/2 cups of the flour.
  • In a medium bowl, mix the milk and eggs to create an egg wash.
  • In a large bowl, combine remaining flour, cornmeal and salt.
  • Add celery salt, pepper, onion powder and paprika.
  • This is the cornmeal breading mixture for the tomatoes.
  • Line a sheet pan with parchment paper to place the breaded tomatoes on after the final dredging.
  • Begin the dipping process by dredging the tomatoes in the flour, then the egg wash, and finally through the cornmeal breading mixture.
  • Repeat this process until all the tomatoes are breaded.
  • Once the oil has reached 350 degrees, begin frying the tomatoes until golden brown on both sides.
  • The tomatoes will float to the top when finished cooking.
  • Drain on paper towels.

  1. Delicious! This was my first foray into fried green tomatoes and it was delicious! I did not have bacon grease, so just fried in vegetable oil. I also didn't have onion powder, so I left that out. Served them with Vidalia Onion Dressing, which gave them an added deliciousness.

  2. I made these right after I saw the movie from a recipe I made myself..very similar to this and also using bacon drippings..my family would line up with their plates, LOL

  3. These were great. I haven't had these in years. I recommend that you at least try them. My 8 year old son even liked them....although hubby didn't care for them. I couldn't get my teens to try them. The only thing I changed was I fried them in half vegetable oil and half bacon drippings....I'm from the midwest.

  4. After seeing the movie, I've always wanted to try the tomatoes myself! I'm not sure whether this is an acquired taste, or if there is some other "trick" to it. I used fresh, green tomatoes from the garden and they turned out really bitter. My husband and I each ate a few bites, but I ended up throwing the rest away. The batter was the only part I liked and since that's what the recipe is for, I'm giving it 4 stars. Hey, I gave it a shot!
