German Apple Cake

"This recipe was posted for ZWT 2010. The cake is perfect for breakfast, mealtime dessert or evening snack. This cake is very similar to apple cakes I tasted while living in Germany. The original version of this recipe posted on Taste of Home."

  • Combine the first three ingredients, then set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the eggs and sugar.
  • In a small bowl combine the oil, orange juice, and orange zest.
  • Alternately add the juice mixture with dry ingredients to egg mixture.
  • Beat until smooth; then add vanilla and blend.
  • Pour half of the batter into a greased and floured tube or bundt pan.
  • Arrange half the apples over the batter.
  • Combine the 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and the 3 Tablespoons sugar.
  • Sprinkle half over the apples.
  • Top with remaining batter.
  • Arrange the remaining apples over the top.
  • Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon and sugar on top.
  • Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a toothpick.
  • inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Cool for 1 hour before removing from pan.
  • Cool, apple side up, on a wire rack.
  • Sprinkle top with confectioners' sugar if desired.
