  • Melt the butter in a saucepan.
  • Add the rice and orzo.
  • Saute and stir until golden.
  • Gently pour in the beef broth and water.
  • Add the turmeric, garlic powder, onion flakes and salt.
  • Stir and bring to a boil.
  • Cover and reduce the flame.
  • Simmer for 20 minutes or until tender.
  • Serve and garnish with the Romano cheese.

  1. Hi Jules..ohhh my you were right this is marvelous. I never changed a thing, just doubled the recipe. Everyone wanted the recipe after I told them the ingredients, they couldn't believe how easy it was..big hit jules. thanks for posting. Its a keeper.
     
  2. Very tasty dish. I sauted chopped onions and 3 cloves of garlic then added the rice and orzo to toast. I also used chicken broth. Amazing flavor and easy to follow directions!
     
  3. I loved it. I've had orzo prepared with more or less the same ingredients but never orzo and rice. Only change I made was to saute fresh garlic and onion and add it with the turmeric.If this isn't listed under comfort food, it needs to be.
     
  4. Just made this for dinner. Didn't have the onion but added a little bit of dried mint and celery salt in addition to the listed ingredients. Yuummm!
     
  5. This was a tasty side dish, and I love the golden color. I used chicken broth this time, and I'll be trying it again with beef broth. Good stuff.

My favorite chefs on the Food Network are Alton Brown, Rachel Ray, Mario Batali, and Giada De Laurentiis. I'm not fond over fakey, over-enthusiastic performance chefs... Emeril drives me up the wall. I appreciate honesty. Of non-celebrity chefs, I've gotta say that that the greatest influences on my cooking have been my mother, Julia Child, and my cooking instructor Chef Gabriel Claycamp at Seattle's Culinary Communion. <br /><br />In the last couple of years I've been typing up all the recipes my grandparents and my mother collected over the years, and am posting them here. Some of them are quite nostalgic and are higher in fat and processed ingredients than recipes I normally collect, but it's really neat to see the different kinds of foods they were interested in... to see them either typewritten oh-so-carefully by my grandfather, in my grandmother's spidery handwriting, or - in some cases - written by my mother years ago in fountain pen ink. It's like time travel. <br /><br />Cooking peeve: food/cooking snobbery. <br /><br />Regarding my black and white icon (which may or may not be the one I'm currently using): it the sea-dragon tattoo that is on the inside of my right ankle. It's also my personal logo.</p>
