Good Old-Fashioned Mashed Potato

"I was looking for a mashed potato recipe on Zaar and couldn't find one. So here it is. We have mashed potatoes with casserole, stew or just as a side. Also being gluten-free I often use a gluten free pastry for the base of a pie and just top it with mash. You can use any quantity of potatoes, butter and milk/cream to your preferences."

ingredients

  • 1 kg potato, peeled
  • 50 g butter
  • 34 cup cream (you can use a combination of both) or 3/4 cup milk (you can use a combination of both)
  • salt
  • white pepper, to taste

directions

  • Peel and cut potatoes into approx equal size pieces.
  • Add potatoes to a saucepan of boiling water and boil until tender.
  • Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan.
  • Use a masher or ricer to mash the potatoes with. The longer you mash the smoother it will be (I just hate it when my mash has lumps!).
  • Add the butter and mash it into the potatoes until melted. Add the milk/cream and mash until a smooth consistency is achieved. Add more milk/cream if you would like a softer or sloppier mash.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • You can also mash in some softened onions, garlic or spring onions.
  • You can also use sweet potato (kumara) or any variety of potato to make mash with.

  1. Great recipe, only thing I would add is that rather than add the potato to boiling water, I was always taught to put the potatoes in cold water and bring to the boil. This way the centre of the potato pieces heat up at the same time as the outside and you don't get lumps in your mash.

  2. Great mashed taters!!! I made this as a side to our roast beef dinner last night. Very simple and traditional recipe for creamy mashed potatoes. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Made for ZWT8.

  3. My family loves mashed potatoes and this is a great recipe. We had this with bangers, our new discovery during ZWT. Made for Aus/NZ tag.

  4. Thanks for posting the recipe. This was the first time I'd ever made homemade mashed potatoes so I appreciated a simple recipe online. I even made a vegan version for family with soy milk and it was delicious!

  5. Great, traditional recipe for mashed potatoes! The only thing I did different was to heat up the potatoes in cold water rather than wait until the water was boiling and just used salt and pepper for seasoning. They turned out fabulous. Made for Aussie recipe swap.

Tweaks

  1. I've been making mashed potatoes like this for years! I like to use maldon sea salt instead of regular table salt. Good plain Aussie mashed spuds...Mmmm Tonight I served mine along side Aussie meat pie, steamed carrots & peas. Reviewed for ZWT3

  2. I've been making mashed potatoes this way foever and it's wonderful. The only things I do differently is to use margarine instead of butter and I use evaporated milk diluted with water. I also use black pepper as I don't generally keep white pepper. This is such a standard recipe in many homes and an important addition to the Zaar collection. Thanks Jubes!
