Goof off Clay (Play Dough - Not Edible)

"Best home made play dough recipe! No endless stirring over the stove top. No baking in the oven. I got this recipe when I was a preschool teacher and have tresured it. GREAT texture....only thing it is missing is the smell of store bought play dough. It calls for Kool Aid to color and scent...but personally I never make it with Kool Aid because I don't want my children to think it is food - it is hard enough to keep kids from eating play dough. But the new neon food colors work really good to get nice color. (DOES NOT AIR DRY OR BAKE WELL)"

directions

  • Mix the dry ingredients together.
  • Add oil and water - if you wanted different colors, you can add the food color after the dough is mixed, but it is easier to mix it in with the water.
  • Mix the ingredients quickly to blend everything. The dough should be stiff and begin to form a ball.
  • Let dough cool slightly, then drop onto a floured surface and knead until smooth, about 5 minute.
  • Store in an air tight container for hours of fun whenever you want it!

  1. this is a favorite in our house... no more store bought clays or play doughs!!! haven't for years... my kids have loved picking their colors and scents from the kool-aid section for their clay/dough!! Thanks for posting this recipe. :)

  2. My kids loved it!!!

  3. This stuff is great and easy! I am anxious to see how long it lasts. Thanks for sharing! :O) UPDATE: If we are successful at keeping this sealed when not using, it lasts about a month, or longer! Woo Hoo!! Play-doh only lasts us about a week before it gets all crumbly. Oh, and if you find, like I did, that cream of tartar has gotten way too expensive in the grocery store (almost $8!!), I discovered Penzey's Spices, where they sell an equivalent amount for about $2!! I believe you can order it online.

  4. This is a terrific recipe for play dough. Very fast and easy. I can't be in the same room with store bought play-doh because of the smell. We got rid of all of the old stuff when I made this batch. It holds together really well. I can't wait to try different colors. Thanks for sharing!

  5. The perfect playdough recipe! I also won't use the kool-aid because my class of little 1 year olds would think it was snack-time! The only thing I don't like is it leaves hands gritty from the salt, but if I remember correctly from childhood that is typical of homemade playdough.
