Grandma Town's Brown Bread

"This is my great, great grandmother's bread recipe, and every generation does it their own way. It is very dark and heavy, but really good, especially warm."

  1. This was wonderful. It has a delicious, not too sweet taste and was very soft and rich tasting. If you have never had brown bread before, don't expect it to rise up tall and slice neatly - this is more of a tearing bread (I consider brown bread to be in the same family as soda bread and beer bread) and sits very low in the pan. It is dense and chewy - just as it is supposed to be. This would be a great accompaniment to a hot bowl of oatmeal on a cold winter day - drizzled with butter and syrup, yum! Thanks for a great recipe!
