Green Beans Depression Style

"Finally something before my time. Apparently this fed a lot of families during the depression. Will feed alot. I make it during the summer with beans from the garden and freeze them. Great way to use up the surplus."

  • Break beans in half and put in large kettle.
  • Add rest of ingredients.
  • Bring to full boil.
  • Cover half way, turn heat down to simmer, forget it for about 3 hours.
  • Scoop out with slotted spoon or serve with broth.
  • I use spoon, dh takes the broth.

I'm 65 years old and have been cooking since I was 10. My first meal was Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. My mother talked me through everything. She hated to cook. I'm completely the opposite, I love to cook and try different things. been married for 42 years and have 3 kids. Two girls and a boy, four grandchildren that I spoil rotten. Had a stroke 1 year ago but it's not stopping me. My second love is camping.
