ingredients
- 1 beaten egg
- 1⁄4 cup meatless spaghetti sauce, your choice
- 1⁄3 cup fine dry breadcrumb
- 1⁄3 cup onion, chopped
- 3 tablespoons fresh basil (can use dry, but fresh makes the difference) or 3 oregano, chopped (can use dry, but fresh makes the difference)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 lb bulk Italian sausage
- 2 medium green bell peppers, halved cut into rings
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 6 ounces mozzarella cheese, halved crosswise
- 1 cup meatless spaghetti sauce, your choice
- 8 kaiser rolls, split and toasted
directions
- Combine egg, and the 1/4 cup spaghetti sauce in a large mixing bowl. Stir in bread crumbs, onion, basil or oregano, and garlic. Add beef and sausage; mix well. Shape meat mixture into eight 1/2-inch-thick patties.
- Tear off a 12x18-inch piece of heavy foil. Place pepper slices in center of foil; drizzle with oil. Bring up 2 opposite edges of foil;seal with a double fold. Then fold in remaining ends to enclose the peppers, leaving place for steam to build.
- Grill burgers and foil packet on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium coals for 10 to 12 minutes or until burgers are no longer pink and peppers are tender, turning burgers and foil packet once halfway through grilling time.
- Top each burger with some of the pepper strips and a half slice of cheese; cover and grill about 15 seconds more or until cheese melts.
- Meanwhile, heat the 1 cup of spaghetti sauce either on the grill or stove top. To serve, place burgers on kaiser rolls. Spoon spaghetti sauce over burgers. Pass any remaining sauce.

I love to make Italian and Mexican food the best, followed by Chinese and last, but by far the least, good old American food! How can you beat chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy?? I love to find several recipes and put my own spin on them and create a new recipe.
