Grilled Safari Steak With Mango Chutney and Mushrooms

"Thanks to Peacefulnightdove for renaming this recipe. The real name Monkey Gland Steak - a Sweet Marinade Sauce But trust me No monkey here! African recipe posted for tour 2005. I used a mango chutney with Raisins and Red Chilies. Bought a rump roast that I sliced across the grain into steaks."

  1. A really delicious recipe with a sweet, tangy, piquant sauce. I used fresh, coarsely chopped, steamed white mushrooms instead of canned; I think that was the only substitution I made. I used a Major Grey's mango chutney, and it seemed to go very well in the sauce. I served this with some haricots vert, garlicky sauteed zucchini, and some garlic mashed potatoes, all of which went well with the recipe. I will very likely make this again, though I will probably have to tweak it a bit--my son dislikes mushrooms, and it was maybe just a bit too tangy for the kids' tastes. But DH & I both enjoyed it quite a bit just as it is!

  2. I made this using my own Recipe #289381 and used Faux Filet steaks - cut across the grain to serve! Excelllent! I asked Malcolm to rate these tonight - I cook and therefor have the deciding vote normally - he said..............FIVE!! A wonderful recipe that only needed a crisp mixed salad as a side - my waist has expanded during ZWT and we wanted a carb free meal! Lovely recipe Reets - as I expect from you! Made for ZWT4 - Merci! FT:-)

  3. What a very different way to do steak, we really enjoyed this Rita! Left off the mushrooms as we aren't fans and used malt vinegar as that was what was on hand. The steaks were tender and the sauce very nice - thanks for sharing!

  4. This was really good. I used a 2" thick sirloin roast. Marinaded over night, and grilled over low coals with cherry wood chips for a little smoke. Every one loved it. Thanks for posting.
