Halloween Can't Leave Alone Bars

"From a cake mix! Easy and impressive! This version of the recipe from Taste Of Homes' Cake Mix Creations, has slightly more specific instructions and added ingredients than another recipe posted here. I'm sure they taste just the same, but I wanted to get this tried and true recipe in for my own records. I've used this for HALLOWEEN and CHRISTMAS with different food colorings for either the crust or the top batter or both, and have left plain for everyday. Bonus: They freeze very well. I've also found that they need to be cut smaller than your average bar size as they're very rich.(and I love chocolate!)"

  1. What a neat recipe! It's already a favorite one since I've made it three times! These taste great, like an "elevated brownie" with a cookie base. I rolled out my dough for the top (in a ziplock freezer bag) and placed it on top, covering the entire top. It reminded me of fondant. Thanks Hotmitts, for a recipe I will make often. Roxygirl

  2. Much too sweet. I guess it would be OK if you like sickeningly sweet desserts, but after tasting 2 bites of it, I threw the entire recipe out. Even my son, who is a lifelong chocoholic, said it was only "OK", but too sweet. Also, the chocolate doesn't set enough as to where you are able to cut clean slices. Rather, when you cut a slice, it sags as you try to eat it.

  3. Oh yum this looks so good :)

  4. Just ok - VERY sweet - but not outstanding. The orange color was not very pronounced after baking- probably my fault - so use a LOT of food coloring.

  5. YUM-YUM FUN!!! Made for PAC, Fall'07...in time for Halloween happiness :) Sweet, "chocolaty" and a bit decadent... just the way I like Halloween Celebrations to be :) I love the idea of the food coloring as a once in a while added visual treat!! It make the treat even more tricky!!! I made my bottom layer orange and topped it with green "ghoulish" blobs!! Makes a ton of rich chocolate squares and I had to pry them away from my husband to freeze a bunch until Halloween Eve (He wouldn't LEAVE THEM ALONE {LOL} :) ) I will make these again and plan to try white chocolate chips and maybe "dye" all 3 layers...I will do them for CHRISTMAS FUN ALSO - THANKS for a cute, creative and yummy recipe!
