"Use your favorite unsliced loaf of bakery bread in this easy recipe. I prefer a garlic sourdough, with a nice chewy crust."

ingredients

  • 1 lb loaf sourdough bread, unsliced (not round)
  • 13 cup butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons honey dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish, if desired (optional)
  • 8 slices cooked ham
  • 16 slices swiss cheese
  • 1 green bell pepper, cut into 8 thin rings

directions

  • Slice loaf into 16 equal slices, cutting to but not through bottom of loaf.
  • In a small bowl, combine butter, mustard and horseradish.
  • Spread every other slice of the bread with this mixture, beginning with first slice, so the coated slices are facing each other. Imagine cutting the loaf to make sandwiches, and that will help you figure out which sides of the bread slices to coat.
  • Fill the coated slices with one slice of ham, one slice of cheese and green pepper rings. Wrap well in plastic wrap and chill. To serve, cut between unfilled slices to form sandwiches.

  1. Loved these sandwiches. The bell pepper, horseradish, mustard and swiss complement the ham so well and the sourdough is the perfect bread for this sandwich. Served with breezemom's Recipe #366061 on the side and boy what a great lunch that made. The two recipes Really work well together. Thanks so much for the post.

  2. I halved the recipe. These are delicious. I love ham and swiss. I normally don't like horseradish but I enjoyed it with these sandwiches. Thanks for sharing! Made for Gimme 5 tag.

  3. I scaled the recipe back to two sandwiches, made with ciabatta for a delicious take-to-work lunch yesterday. I omitted the horseradish as I'm not overly fond of it but I greatly enjoyed the honey mustard with the ham and Swiss cheese. The crunch from the bell pepper provided great textural variation and went superbly with the other ingredients. Thank you, Annacia, for another delicious sandwich recipe to add to my regular rotation for take-to-work lunches! Made for 1-2-3 Hit Wonders.

  4. I found this sandwich to be absolutley wonderful..... I'm the only one at my house that will eat sourdough bread so I fixed this using just sliced bread for myself..... Well, I ended up having another the next day as well.... The bell pepper gave this sandwich such a refreshing flavor.. Thanks so much for sharing....

  5. This is a good sandwich. I made one for my husband and myself with just a few slices of sourdough instead of with a whole loaf. I did have to substitute smoked gouda for the swiss. I would make this again and in fact spoke with my SIL about making for my brothers birthday next month. Thanks Annacia - Hill Family
