  1. This is great! I was truly disappointed they quit distributing (at least in my neck of the woods) hamburger helper rice oriental. That was my favorite growing up. I would almost eat the entire pot, LOL. Anyhoo, this recipe is almost identical in the flavor profile, but I omitted the onion soup mix ( It didn't work for me). I used powdered Knorr beef caldo instead. I added some red pepper flakes, chopped romaine lettuce - which is excellent sauteèd BTW. It turned out very similar to the original and I am very happy because it tastes pretty much the same as the original I am definetly adding this to my cooking routine! Yumm-O!

  2. Let me preface by saying, with so many people searching for clone recipes of Hamburger Helper Rice Oriental,I can't understand why they stopped selling it!!!This recipe comes close.I'm gonna try 3 cups of water next time and maybe a little more soy sauce.

  3. This made me so happy! Was exactly like the Rice Oriental Hamburger Helper that I remember. I used 3 cups of water instead but made it exactly like said otherwise. I was missing it so I googled it today. The best and everyone at home agreed.

  4. Awesome but it needs 1 more step. Add a slurry of corn starch halfway through. Put 2 TB cornstarch in a small bowl. Add water to liquefy. Add to pan.

  5. DELICIOUS!!! My new favorite pintrest recipe. The original hamburger helper was the best, However this recipe is a close second. Loved it!!! Thank you for posting this tecipe.

Tweaks

  1. I use this same recipe but I add 2 TBLS cornstarch. It gives it the exact consistency of the old mix. I simmer it 20 minutes, stir, so it doesn't stick and simmer it 10 more minutes. It tastes exactly like the original with the cornstarch.

  2. Just saying, I used ground turkey sausage, added half a 1015 diced onion, and also added an envelope of brown gravy mix to the dish as written. Yum. Very close to nostalgic memories of Hamburger Helper.

  3. This recipe is a great substitute! It will never taste exactly like box because we do not have access to their suppliers so rice, soy sauce, etc that you use will affect taste slightly. For those worried about salt, you can substitute Bragg's Liquid Aminos for the soy sauce and there are recipes online for making your own onion soup mix.
