ingredients
-
Meat mixture
- 1 1⁄2 lbs hamburger
- 1 lb ground mild Italian sausage
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 small green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 teaspoon whole fennel seed
- 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄4 teaspoon fresh coarse ground black pepper
- 1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1⁄2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1⁄2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- 1⁄2 teaspoon dried basil
-
Sauce
- 3 (15 ounce) cans Hunts tomato sauce
- 1 (14 ounce) can delmonte original stewed tomatoes
- 1 (6 ounce) can Contadina tomato paste
- 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 1⁄2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1⁄2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1⁄2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- 1⁄4 teaspoon thyme
- 1 1⁄4 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon packed dark brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon packed dark brown sugar
- 1 bay leaf
- 1⁄2 teaspoon beef bouillon powder
- 1⁄8 - 1⁄4 teaspoon salt, to taste (optional)
- 1 (8 ounce) cont. fresh sliced mushrooms
directions
- In large mixing bowl, combine well with hands the 2 meats.
- Add to deep, large non-stick skillet. *If not using non-stick pan, add a little olive oil to pan first so it won't stick.
- Sprinkle EVENLY rest of meat mixture ingredients over meats. Stir meats to mix in herbs and spices.
- Cook over medium heat til meat is no longer pink. Break up meat as you go along, but just don't overdo it. You don't want tiny, overly fine pieces.
- Drain grease.
- Pour into large heavy-bottomed pot.
- Add rest of ingredients EXCEPT mushrooms, and stir/fold to mix well.
- Now add the mushrooms! :).
- Heat over medium heat til simmering.
- Lower heat to just a simmer and cook, stirring every so often, for about 30 minutes.
- Serve over hot, cooked and well drained spaghetti, thin spaghetti, mostaccioli, or rotini noodles.
- Serve with tossed salad, garlic bread and parmesan cheese on the side if desired. ENJOY!

This is absolutely the greatest!! I am such a "picky pasta eater" as my family says...This is a great meaty sauce that far passes most italian restruant fare that I have had. My favorite food is pasta but I hate to order it out..and usually at home due to time I fix a meatless sauce..I will be fixing this from now on. This was fast and easy to put together after work..had all the ingreds. on hand except we don't care for bell pepper so left it out. Made my house smell soooooo good! Thanks for a great meal..10 STARS!!

Excellent spaghetti sauce! This is so great tasting. I love all the different flavors and how well they blend so perfectly together. I made this when my family came to visit and we all enjoyed it very much. I now have a new favorite spaghetti sauce and it will be going into my favorites folder. Also this is very quick and so easy to prepare, and that is great! Thanks a bunch Wildflour....

I hate to be the first one to give this a bad rating but this was terrible! I then added to it: 1 1/2 cups red wine plus 3 tablespoons of butter to cut the acidity. Don't be afraid to add wine to your spaghetti sauce it gives it a good rich flavor. I also simmered this for about 1-1/2 hours and then it thickend. It then tasted so good. The short time to simmer it that was given is NOT long enough. Sorry :(
