"A traditional Philadelphia hoagie. You can substitute turkey or tuna for the meats, but a "true" hoagie is The Italian. the bread is very important! Not too soft, not too crusty."

  • Slice roll and drizzle with oil.
  • Layer, in order, cheese, salami, and cappicolla.
  • Top with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and peppers and/or pickles, if using.
  • Drizzle with a bit more oil, and sprinkle with oregano.
  • Hold the mayo!

  1. This IS a true Hoagie. You're right about the bread, but I would also use extra virgin olive oil. Plain oil just won't do. And - Hold the mayo!
     
  2. A pretty good hoagie recipe! Especially because it recognizes the importance of the correct type of bread. Otherwise, it's just a sandwhich. Yes, capicola, genoa(hard) salami, and provalone are essential, but it left out boiled ham as an ingredient, although some use mortadella, an Italian bologna. Additionally, use thin sliced dill pickles, not the spears. Finally, peppers (either) is generally more of a Deleware twist of a philly favorite, but can be good. Thanks, Holly!
