ingredients

1 cup cornmeal
¹⁄₂ cup flour
¹⁄₂ teaspoon salt
1 ¹⁄₂ teaspoons baking powder
³⁄₄ cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons hot melted shortening
2 tablespoons onions, grated

directions

Mix all ingredients together. Drop by tablespoonfuls into hot fat. (Use enough fat to cover half of each portion of batter.) Brown on one side; turn, brown. Serve as bread with fried fish. Yield and cook times are approximate.
