Ice Cream Jello

"I had this recipe at a shower over 20 years ago and since then has been a must have at holiday's, graduation parties and get-togethers. I use a glass 9x13-inch dish and after it's done it's really pretty to look at and even better to eat.. It is Better if You use vanilla and not vanilla bean ice cream. Thanks for trying my ice cream recipe. :)"

directions

  • Add 1 cup of boiling water to package of cherry Jello and stir.
  • Add 1/4 of the vanilla ice cream and use a whisk to whip with the Jello.
  • Let set in a clear 9x13-inch pan for 15 minutes or as Wife2uRick suggested waiting 15-30 minutes or until set.
  • Then Add 1 cup of boiling water to package of lemon Jello and add 1/4 of the vanilla ice cream and use a whisk to whip with the Jello.
  • Let set on top of the cherry layer for 15 minutes or until set.
  • Then add 1 cup to the lime Jello and add 1/4 of the vanilla ice cream and whisk to whip with the Jello.
  • Let set on top of lemon Jello for 15 minutes or until set.
  • Then with the last box of Jello which is orange add 1 cup of boiling water and the last 1/4 vanilla ice cream and whisk together and put on top of lime Jello and let set.
  • I usually do other things while I am making this and you can also use your favorite jello's but these together taste really good and I always am asked to bring it.
  • Note: I usually cut my ice-cream in fourths and leave the ice-cream in the freezer until I use each 1/4th for the Jello.
  • Jello can be stored in refrigerator when done. :).

Questions & Replies

  1. Can, I make this the day before the party?

  2. Can I use sugar-free Jello to make the ice cream-jello?

  3. Does anyone remember the old Jello-brand 1-2-3 dessert mix? We used to make it with a homemade recipe that I can’t quite remember. This looks similar.

  4. Does it set in the refrigerator? How do you keep the layers from mixing when you're pouring something hot / warm onto something cold?

  5. Hi, Does this hold up if it is taken out of the pan and served "Cake Style"? Like could I cover it in a cool whip frosting all the way around?

  1. This JELLO was made for a kid's b-day party. Was really GREAT and enjoyed by both Kids and Grownups. Make sure each layer cools completely by refrigerating, as my first attempt in making this was poured down the drain. I didn't allolw enough time for the layer to cool/set and the second layer of jello poured right through and it was one HUGE mess. So,my next attempt, I allowed to cool about 1 hr in between layers in fridge, and worked out GREAT!

  2. Concentrated Jello along with Ice Cream? This is far too sweet so, it should be served in small portions. Sugar-free Jell-O is still too sweet. I will make it with the ice cream with unsweetened unflavored gelatin and Kool Aid instead. Only the ice cream has the sweetness in it. Also, you have to be extremely careful not to get any mix splashed onto the sides of the glass as it will look smudged. Spoon off any foam before transferring the mix to the glasses as it will break loose and float to the top even after it is set. However, this can be hidden with whipped cream. If you do not whip it enough, jello will separate and form a level between the layers but this could be a plus as a change in texture. If you use glasses with opaque sides, the discovery of the layers will be a plus for presentation. The picture is my first attempt so it is a bit messy. Next time, I will use a baster to move the mix into the dessert glasses.

  3. This sounds great and looks amazing. Has anyone stored this in the freezer?

  4. I did notice one thing that might be helpful to others--if you let the Jello set up too much between layers, they will separate when served. They "stick" together better if just set when you add the next layer. I waited for several minutes for the Jello to cool off (but still warm) before adding the ice cream. I put it in the refrigerator between layers without any other waiting in between. Very beautiful and surprisingly, not too sweet.

  5. This looks so pretty! Unfortunately, I made with "no name" jello & it didn't set. I have to attempt to do this again with "real" jello.

Tweaks

  1. I recall making a dessert like this with my gran, the main difference was weused evaporated milk instead of the ice cream , and layering regular jello and the layer with evaporated milk layer, let each layer set up for about 15-30 minutes. Gran always served this at potlucks, gatherings, etc. I miss her, but love the fact she taught me too cook and to be an independent and adventurous woman.

  2. Change from Jello to Kool Aid and unflavored/unsweetened gelatin. Be painstakingly careful not to smear mix to the sides of the glass when assembling as it will make the presentation a bit messy. Use a baster for the transfer.
