"I clipped this from The Scottsdale Living Newspaper; it's a heritage recipe. It comes from a three-generation Arizona family (Olson) and dates back to WWII. I thought the use of Ice Water, was interesting The Cool Whip Frosting recipe is recipe #369221.."

ingredients

¹⁄₂ cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 ¹⁄₂ cups ice water
3 ¹⁄₂ cups cake flour (sifted)
4 egg whites (stiffly beaten)
3 ¹⁄₂ teaspoons baking powder

directions

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy; add vanilla.
Remove ice from water and add 1 1/2 c water alternately with sifted flour in 3 additions, beating well after each addition; add baking powder.
Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Bake in three greased 9"layer pans (or one 9x14 pan) at 375 for 25 minute.
Do not overbake.
Frost with your choice of frosting or Cool Whip Frosting.
