Italian Shepherd's Pie (Italian Pate Chinois)

"Pate chinois is a French-Canadian specialty and this has a different twist - it uses ground veal and hot italian sausages. It is sooooo good! Got this recipe in a French magazine - will try to translate as best as I can!"

directions

  • Preheat oven 375°F.
  • Cook the potatoes in salted water until they are cooked. Drain them. Mash them with the oil or butter and season them with salt and pepper (or use your favorite mashed potatoes recipe!). Put aside.
  • Take the sausages out of their casing and mix with the ground veal.
  • Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan. Add the peppers and the onions and cook for about 5 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add salt and pepper and oregano. Put in a bowl.
  • Put back the frying pan on the stove and cook the veal and sausage meat until cooked. Drain the fat out of the pan.
  • Put the meat at the bottom of a rectangular pan sprayed with Pam. Put the bell peppers and onion on top of the meat and, lastly, the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with the Italian breadcrumbs.
  • Put in oven for 40 minutes.

  1. Being Italian, I always gravitate toward Italian recipes for some reason! This one looked so good, I had to give it a try. My DS and his GF were over for supper, and I wanted to make something different. I used 3 hot and 3 sweet sausages in mine, and cut the peppers down to 2 green ones, as that's all I had. I used 4 cloves of garlic, and sprinkled the meat with garlic powder as I was browning it. I used 2 tsp. oregano for ours, and I added in some Parmesan cheese with the meat mixture also, about 1/4 cup. It was a really delicious outcome, and we will have again on our meal rotation. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I used 1 red pepper and 1 green pepper which and mixed some parmesan cheese into my mashed potatoes and some more ontop of the mashed potatoe. I didn't have italian style breadcrumbs so I mixed in about 1 tsp italian seasoning. 5 cloves of garlic and 1 tsp oregano seemed to work well in the pepper mix. Lovely recipe, I'll definitely make this again. Thanks for posting!

  3. This is a great recipe, but why is it categorized under "lighter fair"? 800 cal per serving is not light.

  4. DH and I had this for dinner awhile back. We thought it was a nice dish. Despite the hot Italian sausages, we still found the dish to be a little bit bland. Some red pepper flakes or small red chili peppers might enhance the dish. Thank you for posting.

  5. Wow Redsie...this was so good. I am not a fan of normal shepperds pie but this is special. I loved the combination of veal and hot sausages. I used red, yellow, orange and green peppers. sweet onions and elephant garlic. I didn't have enough potatoes so my layer was thin...but perfect. It was quick and easy to make and is full of flavor. Thanks so much for sharing. I will definitely make this again...kudos BK
