“This is a modern Hawaiian staple. Developed in Hilo on the big island. Generally a Salisbury steak (errr, hamburger) over a bed of rice and topped with a fried egg and gravy. My version is a bit healthier by not making the gravy out of pan drippings (Some places will even cook the burger in oil to make it tastier and easier to make the roux for gravy and drop the burger back into the gravy). *Note - The gravy will be much more than you will need, it makes about 1 cup and you will only need about a half of it, I thought for the sake of efficiency, who wants to keep a half a can of beef broth in the fridge? Lastly, this is a small order, order it in Hawaii and you might get the kitchen sink, 2 cups rice, 2 burger patties and 2 fried eggs! Better get some surfin' or hikin' in brah ;-)”

  1. Steam the rice, as the rice is finishing prepare the gravy and start cooking the burger Press the ground beef into a patty, season with salt and pepper. Grill or fry to desired doneness.
  2. Place the steamed rice in a bowl. Place the burger on the rice and keep warm.
  3. Fry the egg sunny side up. Just before the egg is done, pour the warm gravy over the burger so it glazes both the burger and the rice. Slide the sunny side up egg over the burger. Serve immediately.
