ingredients
- 1⁄2 cup crisco white shortening, room temperature (white)
- 1⁄2 cup butter, softened or 1/2 cup margarine
- 4 -6 4 -6 tablespoons half-and-half cream or 4 -6 tablespoons milk
- 1⁄4 teaspoon salt (heaping)
- 1⁄2 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 teaspoons vanilla or 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 5 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted (or as needed)
- 2 -4 drops food coloring (OPTIONAL ( OR for flavor and color, use 1-2 envelopes 3-grams each, Duncan Hines Frosting Creations )
directions
- In a large bowl using an electric mixer at medium speed beat together the shortening and margarine or butter with cream, salt almond extract and vanilla until smooth (about 3 minutes).
- Add in sifted confectioners sugar starting with 4-1/2 cups; beat very well until smooth and fluffy, adding more confectioners sugar or cream or milk until you achieve desired consistency.
- Add in the food coloring or Flavor Creation powder (if using) until the desired shade is achieved.

Once again you remind me why I always look for your name when I search out a recipe. Kittencal has actually become synonymus with awesome in our house; in fact, when my 9-year-old raved about how yummy this frosting is, I said "It's a Kittencal," to which he responded with a shrug, "That explains it." :) YUMMY!!!!

I wish this had worked out better for me, as the reviews are so good! I used a different kind of shortening, and butter.... Had a hard time getting the frosting to come together thick enough, and it ended up too sugary for my taste. It might be because i didn't use the exact brands, but I would've appreciated a recipe for frosting that allows for creative deviation! Still on the hunt for "the perfect frosting recipe".

This was an amazing buttercream frosting! The consistency was light and sugary, and was the perfect consistency for piping - not too runny, but not too thick. I followed the recipe as directed, using heavy cream but only 4 cups of confectioner's sugar and it was the perfect thickness. The only improvement I would make would be to leave out the almond extract, because it is a very powerful additive and tends to make the frosting taste too much like cherries.

I thought this was a truly delicious recipe, as all Kittencal's are. I only made a few minor alterations, instead of using criso, I used two sticks of margarine and skim milk to make it healthier. The taste was still great and I'm sure it will go over fabulous on my sugar cookies. Thank you Kittencal, I remain your humble follower.

Super easy and delicious! When I was eating a chocolate cake with this frosting, I truly forgot that I had made it and thought it came from a top notch bakery. I used milk instead of cream and it came out fine (Kittencal had mentioned to me that milk could be used as a substitute). The better half enjoyed and has requested a cake everyday. We compromised and agreed to a cake once a month from now on. Thank you Kittencal!!
