Kittencal's Salisbury Steak With Mushrooms and Onion Gravy

"This is total comfort food at it's very best! ---to save time this may also be made using store bought frozen hamburger patties ---the yield amount for this is six if you like lots of gravy then increase amounts to 3 cups beef broth and 6-7 tablespoons flour --- this is a must served with mashed potatoes :)"

directions

  • In a bowl combine all hamburger mixture until combined.
  • Shape into 6 patties.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add in hamburger patties, cook until browned on each side (about 3-4 minutes per side, the burgers do not have to be cooked all the way through as they will finish cooking completely in the gravy) remove to a plate.
  • To the same skillet add in sliced onion and mushrooms; cook stirring scraping up any browned bits that have accumulated on the bottom of the skillet; cook for about 8-10 minutes or until the onions are softened (adding in more oil if needed).
  • Add in flour and cayenne pepper; stir for 2 minutes.
  • Add in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper; bring to a simmer stirring continuously until bubbly and thickened (at this point you may add in the beef bouillon powder).
  • Add in the patties back to the skillet.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 25 minutes turning the patties over once halfway through cooking.

  1. After the first few reviews I can only see a small part of each review. Why is that? How can I see the full reviews?

  1. You can never go wrong with a kittencal recipe and this one did not disappoint. It's like the kind I ate as a kid in a tv dinner but 100 times better. So flavorful and it was a big hit. Loved it!

  2. I make this all the time for my family. It’s a favorite with no leftovers. I don’t cook it on the stove but in the crockpot after I brown the burgers. 6 hours later it’s done.

  3. I actually didnt see that I was supposed to incorporate the onion soup mix in the hamburger mixture. I realized jt after the fact. So, i still added it …. But in the sauce. I served it with mashed potatoes and seasoned steamed broccoli. My boyfriend and I felt like we were having dinner at restaurant. It was fantastic! Thank you for sharing.

  4. Delicious. I put the leftover Onion Soup Mix into the gravy, to cook with the veggies and meat.

  5. Kittencal this was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!! Even my hubby could not stop raving about it! He said it was one of the best meals I have made him. Now of course I added my special little touch :-), but this recipe truly is good as it is! Another winner from Kitten!

Tweaks

  1. I made this for "Sunday Dinner" today. It was awesome (plus I have leftovers for Tuesday night with garlic bread and asparagus)! I had already caramelized some onions in the crock pot last weekend, so I used those in place of the onion (and 2 small cans of canned mushrooms in place of the mushrooms). Definitely a keeper! (Oh, and served the gravy over twice baked potato casserole.)
