ingredients

1 cup water
¹⁄₂ cup sugar
1 cup raisins or 1 cup dates, chopped
1 cup shortening
3 cups brown sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups flour
¹⁄₂ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup walnuts

directions

Cook the water, sugar, and raisins or dates together, stirring constantly as it burns.
Cook until thick; cool.
Cream shortening and brown sugar together; add eggs, one at a time.
Add vanilla.
Sift flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon together; add walnuts.
Add to creamed mixture.
Pat or roll out on wax paper or towel to 1/2 inch thick.
Spread date mixture over it, roll up and store in refrigerator.
Slice and bake as needed.
No time or temperature was given for baking; I am guessing 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.
