McDonald's Breakfast Burritos

"Years (and years) ago, while in high school, I worked at McDonald's when they first came out with these wonderful creations. After all this time, I still love to make and eat them. I think they have changed it over the years for the dollar menu but this is the ORIGINAL recipe. Sometimes when I don't have fresh tomatoes I substitute a little salsa or some drained Rotel tomatoes taste the best. If you go with the Rotel option, you can omit the diced green chilies that are called for in the recipe."

Reviews

  1. Very good! We love these burritos wanted to make at home for quick breakfasts. I looked at several recipes this one is what we chose. I wanted to use what we had on hand & some other reviews said that McD's uses dehydrated onion reconstituted. I used some Jimmy Dean Turkey sausage patties (frozen) chopped up. Canned diced tomato, canned chilies, dried chopped onion. Of course we ate some that night for dinner. We froze the rest and in the morning microwaved for 1:30-2 mins and they taste even better!!

  2. I've always loved McDonald's Breakfast burritos & was pleasantly surprised to find these really do taste very similar. I used 1 entire pound of sausage & 1 can of drained, diced tomatoes instead of the fresh, otherwise I followed all instructions (this gave me 12 nicely-packed burritos). Even more surprisingly, they taste BETTER the next day AND they freeze well (zip em in the microwave for about 90 secs & you'll have a quicker-than-fast food breakfast!)! Thanks Jenny...I'll be making these regularly!!! :)

  4. I've been looking for the real McCoy! Thanks for posting this. These are great and it's the AMERICAN cheese that really makes these what they are!

  5. These taste just like the real thing! I found the directions clear and easy to follow, and the results were very tasty. A great idea for a kid's sleepover party breakfast.

Tweaks

  1. I was GM for McDonalds when these were first introduced. There are quite a few problems with this recipe. 1) McDonalds used reconstituted dehydrated onions, not fresh 2) McDonalds used pre-cooked sausage, not fresh sausage. Walmart sells that sausage in crumbles and patties under the Great Value brand name 3) McDonalds never added salt, just black pepper. 4) To taste right, it has to be Kraft Deluxe American Cheese 5) McDonalds never served the breakfast burrito with sour cream. The option was a packet of hot sauce. The chicken fajita they served in the evening came with sour cream.

  2. Thanks for the inspiration! A huge hit with my growing boys who Love McD’s breakfast burritos...they loved these even more. I upped the ground sausage to 1 lb for my meat lovers. Tip : I use a potato masher to make the meat a finer crumble mixture. My husband was skeptical that it would be too bland, so I seasoned it with salt & ground pepper, parprika, and Italian seasoning. Then added the diced onion while it was browning. Separately, I cooked the scrambled eggs, chilies, 1 Roma tomato (I removed the seeds to cut down on the juice), and I added 1/2 yellow pepper finely chopped. I folded in the sausage mixture, and used 1/4 cup for the smaller, 8” tortillas with 1/2 a kraft cheese slice. I was able to make 30 burritos. We gobbled down 10 between the 4 of us with salsa on the side, then I froze the remainder on a parchment lined cookie sheet, then bagged them up for a quick breakfast next week!
