Mcdonald's Hot Mustard Sauce Clone

"Found this recipe at: http://www.epicconstructions.com/mirror/mcd/ The recipes are in pdf & various fonts & formatting that don't translate well when printed. Some of the words I can't even read on paper at all (2 point type size), so I'm posting it here so we can use it again. It's the closest to McDonald's we've found to date. We had a package of the original sauce to compare side-by-side with. There is definitely no cayenne in the original (which is one of the clone's best assets) & the original tastes like it has a touch of BBQ sauce in it. I've seen a lot of recipes with Heinz 57 listed but I wasn't interested in trying another one of those tonight. This recipe utilized everything I already had on hand. We let it refrigerate for about 6 hours & the flavors mellowed quite a bit but I think the sauce will benefit from a longer refrigeration time as the mustard & vinegar flavors are overpowering right after mixing."

  1. You can easily tweak this hotter / sweeter etc. Taste just like the real thing. I make mine a little less sweet and hotter with a tad less vinegar and I use light syrup. Also it seems leaving out mayo doesn't make much difference. If you like sweet&sour sauce try this one. https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/food/6473682/how-mcdonalds-sweet-sour-sauce-home-easier/

  2. It looks really good! I love mcdonalds hot mustard but it cost like .20 extra per sauce packet thing! I hope it tastes like the real thing! Thanks soooo much for sharing, i've been looking for something like this for a long time!

  3. very nice!!! i have made this many times to go along with my own copycat chicken mcnugget recipe and fries. this is a keeper for sure, and very easy to whip together with help from the microwave !! thanks for posting!

  4. This was really good! I added a little extra cayenne though.<br/>Yummy now i don't have to stock up on the little packs of mustard from mcdonalds!! Thank you so much!

  5. I am complete agreement with the other reviewer! I have been trying to mess around making this type of "hot mustard" for a long time. At McDonald's I always try to grab more then two packs alas, or I will soon be out. Presto! Here it was, right in our own back yard! I followed this exactly, using your suggestion of light corn syrup, low-sodium soy sauce, and cayenne pepper (at least an 1/8th teaspoon) I made some baked chicken strips and used this and tasted like perfection! 1. Mmmmm this is great stuff! I don't eat at McDonald's (it doesn't like me) so don't have any basis of comparison but I love mustards of all kinds and this is a good one! I halved the recipe and since I only had light corn syrup on hand, I replaced about 1/2-3/4 tsp of it with molasses to get more of a dark corn syrup vibe (I added a drizzle of molasses to the measuring spoon then topped it off with the corn syrup). For the yellow mustard I used Plochman's since it was what I had on hand (I like it better than French's). This was a quick, easy, and tasty mustard so I'm sure I'll be making it again! Thanks for sharing!

Hi! I am happily married with two children, 26 and 12. For nearly 10 years when this site was Recipezaar and then Food.com I hosted several different forums. I'm not on this site much anymore, but I do continue to appreciate and respond to all reviews posted to my recipes.
