Milk Toast

"If you're not feeling 100% and would like something simple to eat, this may be just what the doctor ordered. My husband had this when he was growing up and didn't feel well...(I'd be tempted to use sugar instead of the salt, and raisins could be optional...)"

  1. This is a great meal on a cold day or any day for that matter. My father would never throw food out so if there was stale bread or biscuts it was milk toast the next day. He would heat up the milk with a little butter and salt and pepper to taste and toast the bresd or biscuts poor milk over and enjoy. It is good weather you are sick or not. Also if you have a cake on the stale side of life a little warm milk poured over that is really good.

  2. My Mom was definitely a down home cook and overcooked all meat but you cannot overcook milk toast and I always asked for it when I was sick. We didn't have it with raisins and now I cannot have milk but I think I'll make this recipe tomorrow with almond milk. Thank you, Silent, for the memories.

  3. Just like my best friend's mom used to make when we weren't feeling well. It's supposed to be very wet, so you can still swallow it with a very sore throat. And very bland, so you can still eat it even if you don't want to touch food. My daughter wasn't feeling well and wouldn't have anything to do with food, but I gave her this with a little brown sugar and skipped the raisins. If you're trying to coax the kid back to eating this is a good starting point. And I like it when I feel fine, too. ;)

  4. My mom used to make this for us when we weren't feeling well. After she passed away, Dad came to live with us and I make this for him even when he feels just fine. We have never added raisins or sugar, just lots of salt and pepper in the milk, heated in the microwave, over buttered white bread toast. I also add a teapoon of butter to the milk and cut the toast into bite-sized squares before I put it in the bowl. This recipe says it is for 2, but this is one serving for Dad. Not one of my kids, or DH will even TRY this, but it is their loss as this is SO good!

  5. Mmm ^^. I wasn't feeling particularly unwell, but had a sudden craving for milk toast (I've never tried it before), so I made some of this just now, halved for one person. Tastes lovely and warm and very comforting! I added a pinch of salt (turned out fine!), and used sultanas. Next time I'd probably put less milk, as the toast was pretty much floating in milk - maybe 2/3 or 1/2 cup per person? (This is, of course, my own preference, though, as I usually add just the bare minimum of milk to cereal as well.) A lovely warm snack or light meal, which I'll certainly be making again when the whim strikes.

(As many of you know Silent Cricket passed away on Feb. 29. Since she loved Recipezaar so much and so many on Recipezaar have shown their love for her, and have enjoyed her recipes, her personal information will remain here indefinitely just as she wrote it. Her lines at the end of this section sound somewhat prophetic as the last chapter of her earthly existence has been written.) Well, the time has come for me to change my users' name. After being, "OzCoMartha" because of having lived for three years in Australia and then moving to Colorado, I have decided to "turn over a new leaf." I chose this name because many moons ago I used to be able to "chirp" like a cricket and the "silent" refers to the present time when I'm taking a break...But, perhaps after a season, however long I decide that needs to be, I may be back and then I will fill in more details about myself...
