Monte Cristo Sandwich

"The Monte Cristo is a variation of the French croque-monsieur. I love monte cristo sandwiches that I have eaten at restaurants and found this recipe for it online but switched the jelly!!"

  • For the jelly sauce:

  • Combine jelly, water and half and half in blender and mix until smooth. Makes about 3/4 cup.
  • For the batter:

  • Place water, egg, salt, pepper and food coloring in a bowl and using an electric mixer, mix well at low speed. Add flour and baking powder and mix until batter is smooth. Chill. Makes enough for 4 sandwiches.
  • Sandwiches:

  • Make 4 sandwiches, putting cheese between hand and turkey. Cut into fourths and put a toothpick through each quarter.
  • Heat about 6-inches of oil to 340F in a fryer. Dip sandwiches in batter to cover all surfaces. Deep fry sandwiches until golden brown, turning as needed. Remove from oil, take out toothpicks, sprinkle sandwiches with confectioners' sugar. Serve with raspberry jelly sauce.

  1. This was a hit. I used dinner rolls that I had left over. I also didn't make the jelly sauce because I did not have any raspberry jelly, but I have had them with that before and it really is what takes it over the top. Love the warm creamy cheese, yum. At first I thought the batter might be too runny but it was just fine. I left out the food coloring as I was just making it for us. YUM!

I don't like to cook things that require going to specialized grocery stores. I subscribe to several cooking magazines, that usually, require everyday on-hand ingredients. <br /><br />I am not very fond of most seafood, but do enjoy lobster, grilled shrimp and chilean sea bass. I won't cook anything with rosemary or curry, as I really don't like either herbs' flavor.
