Mother Goose Popcorn

"It doesn't sound like much but I prefer this as an alternative to caramel corn, it is that good. I make it at Christmas time, pink and green and mix them together. Simple to make, sweet and crunchy. Colorful to boot! It goes fast. As far as I know this is an old recipe from long ago."

directions

  • Mix milk and sugar in a sauce pan and on medium heat bring to a boil.
  • Careful not to let it burn and do not scrape the sides of the pan or the sugar will crystalize.
  • Add vanilla extract and your choice of food coloring (it is usually pink or light green) and mix well.
  • Place the popcorn in a large bowl then pour the hot liquid over it and coat as evenly as you can.
  • Spread on a cookie sheet to dry.

  1. Much sweeter than anticipated and not as crunchy as an actual candy recipe but very quick to make, coats evenly and the kids love it

  2. I used less than half of the sauce and salted it. I think this sauce recipe would work for 3 or 4 times as much popcorn!!!! I was skeptical about this recipe. It is quick and easy way to make some sweet popcorn.

  3. A little too sugary not my favorite but it did look festive.

  4. Love This Recipe! My mom always made mother goose popcorn when I was a kid. Her recipe calls for twice the milk and boiling the syrup till 230 degrees. I don't like waiting for syrup to cook so I was thrilled to find this recipe. It worked perfectly for me. I did STIR it until it boiled and continued boiling for a minute or two. It wasn't sticky at all. I have an air popper that pops 1/2 cup of kernels (about7 cups popped) and I thought it was the perfect amount. I like it heavily coated though. I simply stirred until it started to cool and it set up and had the perfect mother goose popcorn texture I've always loved. I made it for Halloween and flavored the orange colored batch with orange and the purple batch with vanilla. YUM!

I was born and raised in Utah. I was a graphic designer for ten years for a local school district. I have since moved on but still enjoy doing that for fun. I love to cook, read, listen to music, craft things. I don't think I really have a favorite cookbook. But if I had to pick it would be one that was written up by women in the area with home recipes. I think those are the best. Probably one of the reasons I enjoy Recipezaar so much.
