Nanny's Walnut Cake

ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup Crisco shortening
- 2 teaspoons vanilla or 2 teaspoons lemon extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1⁄8 teaspoon salt (a pinch!)
- 1 cup milk
- 3 cups flour
- 1 cup ground walnuts
directions
- Mix sugar, eggs, shortening and extract until well blended.
- Sift together dry ingredients and add, alternating with milk, until incorporated.
- Add walnuts and mix.
- Pour batter into a large, lightly greased tube pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Test center with toothpick. If not clean, return cake to oven for an additional 10 minutes.
