  • Combine hot water, shortening, potato flakes, powdered milk, sugar.
  • Stir to dissolve shortening, if using shortening instead of oil.
  • When temperature is tepid, add yeast.
  • Mix in 5 cups flour and the salt.
  • Stir to a smooth sponge.
  • Add flour to make a smooth and elastic dough.
  • Let rise until double (about 45 minutes).
  • Punch down and let rise again.
  • Shape into loaves let rise.
  • Bake in 375°F oven for about 35 minutes.

  1. My family visited Nauvoo about 5 years ago and got this recipe there. It is one of our favorite bread recipes. I recently lost my copy and am so glad to have found it on this site. Even though the recipe doesn't say to, I do prefer to knead the dough before I let it rise the first time. Also, shaping the loaves works a lot better than trying to bake it in loaf pans. Just for fun, I sometimes use olive oil in place of the shortening. It gives it a whole different flavor.
