  1. peel turnips with a vegetable peeler, and cut into 1/2 inch cubes.
  2. fill a medium-size pot wit water and bring to a boil.
  3. add 1/2 teaspoon salt & the turnip cubes and bring to a boil again.
  4. turn the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 20 minutes until the turnips are soft.
  5. drain the turnips into a colander in the sink.
  6. put the turnips back into the pot, and warm on low heat for 1 minute to dry them out.
  7. add butter, half-and-half, and the rest of the salt and pepper.
  8. stir with a spoon while the butter is melting.
  9. mash with a potato masher until soft and fluffy.
