  1. This recipe is excellent. My mom would make this during the winter when I was growing up.Just the smell of this reminds me of being a kid.I am a Newfoundlander and this is definately a Newfoundland traditional food.It is quite a thick soup so you may have to add extra water to thin it out. Also next time I would cut the dumpling recipe in half as the recipe now makes too much.

  2. I've Eaten Lots of pea soup in my life, because it is my very favorite soup, but I have never eaten a pea soup that tastes so good as this soup does.I don't usually care for turnips, but the peas make the turips taste good, and the dumplings make it absolutely delicious. My Goodness but this is really GOOD soup.Thank you so much for this recipe.

  3. This is not really Newfoundland Pea Soup as REAL Newfoundland Pea Soup calls for salt meat which needs to be soaked overnight. The split peas should be soaked as well. One could get very decadent as I did once and include both ham and salt meat but without the salt meat it is more a Maritime soup. We Newfoundlanders were brought up on Jiggs Dinner and Pea Soup - hearty meals during the winte time!

  4. Newfoudland is harldey a poor province.. Although we are the victim of ignorant people who view us incorrectly from the outside.

  5. Wow, thick and hearty comfort food for sure ~ you could certainly get through a Newfie winter with this! It was very filling, almost more of a stew than a soup. My kids, who are sure they don't like split peas, each had two bowls. I ended up adding a fair amount of other spice and thinning it with a bit of dairy, but it was definitely a good winter soup. Thanks so much for posting!
