Nif's Copycat Japanese Village Sesame Steak Sauce

"This is a really close copy of an amazing Japanese sauce that I just love!!! The servings estimate was hard to guess. It depends on how much you like. I tried and tried to find a good recipe online and ended up playing with a couple of them to come up with this. I would try this over almost anything or as a dip for any meat, fondue, Shabu Shabu, etc. It is intended to dip grilled steak into. Enjoy!"

  1. This isn’t correct. I knew someone who got the exact recipe from someone who worked there. I don’t recall the exact ratios as I lost the recipe, but it involves using an egg yolk, a bit of heavy cream, and (absolutely imperative to get it right) Yamasa soya sauce. There was a part onion and sesame oil, but I don’t think garlic was a part of it. Certainly no mustard! Yuk. What an American take. It’s Japanese food! Lol.

  2. This is a nice sauce for dipping! I used it on my steak and we really liked it! I used low sodium soy sauce and it worked well! I think this would go great with steamed shrimp, or even over Japanese noodles, seafood, and veggies. I will be experimenting with this and trying it on sushi as well! Thank you for sharing your recipe with us Nif! Made for 123 Hit Wonders 3/09 Linda

  3. This was simply inedible. I love strong umami flavors but this was so dark and bitter it tasted like the recipe omitted a major ingredient.

  4. the recipe i have is similar except for it's 1/2 cup of soya and 1/2 cup of oil, 2 tsp of garlic, 1-2 tps of dried mustard (let sit for 10 mins) 1/8 cup of cream and tsp of sugar

  5. This is good, but not Japanese Village good - it was my favourite restaurant in Calgary and since I moved away, the steak sauce is what I dream about! I shall continue my search... Thanks! Made for PAC Fall 2012

I love great food and I particularly like trying cuisines new to me! Although I don't prepare as much food as I used to, creating in my kitchen is still one of my favourite things to do. Enjoy!
