This is an old family favorite - my mother made it for us in the 50's but without the almonds and vanilla, just oats, butter and brown sugar. Here's some thoughts to fix peoples problems:

Use light brown sugar for the best taste - Demerara sugar works best.
Always grease the pan before you put the mixture in otherwise it will stick.
To get the right consistency you need to beat the mixture into the pan before you put it into the oven to get all the air out - I use a wooden spoon and beat every inch of the mixture down so that it's solid when it goes into the oven.
When you pull it out of the oven, wet a large metal tablespoon and use the back of the spoon to smooth over the top surface so that it's nice and flat.
Finally - use a pizza cutter to cut the biscuits into oblongs about an inch wide by 2.5 inches long about 10-15 minutes after you take the pan out of the oven. Don't wait for the pan to cool or they will break up.

I made these. I thought they were the ones my mom made in the 60s/70s. Nope. Got my moms recipe (all tattered and torn) 1c brown sugar, 1 cup cornflakes, 1c oatmeal, 1/2 tsp van, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/2c melted butter. Combine. Press into 9x13 (thin) bake 350* for 15-22 min. Lightly browned. Enjoy!!!!!
