Ocean Spray Fresh Cranberry Orange Relish

"This is a very refreshing recipe I have used for years. It comes from the bag of Ocean Spray Cranberries bought in the grocery store. This time of year cranberries are plentiful where I live (in fact I have a huge bag 21 pounds in the refrigerator) so right now I try to give new recipes a try before the fresh ones have to go into the freezer. Give it a try it goes great with your Thanksgiving dinner. Enjoy!"

directions

  • Slice unpeeled orange into eighths and remove any seeds. Place half of the cranberries and half of the orange in food processor. Pulse until evenly chopped. Tranfer to a bowl and repeat with the other half of orange and cranberries. Stir in sugar to taste and store in refrigerator of freezer.
  • You can also use a food grinder for the food processor step. The grinder is my preferred method, becaue that's how my Mom made it so many many years ago.

Questions & Replies

  1. Very similar to mom's recipe except hers had the addition of lemon gelatin.

  2. I was making this for the first time this evening. I used an old fashioned food grinder which I must have done incorrectly. Some of the berries did not chop and there is a LOT of juice from the orange. It tasted good but looked more pulverized than chopped/relish. Question is...if I'm still unhappy after 24 hrs., could I COOK this and make sauce? Berries, orange, pecans and sugar are the only ingredients. Seems logical but.....thanks!

  3. I used to buy cranberry orange relish, now I can't find it, why?

  4. How long can you store this in the refrigerator?

  1. Been using this recipe for over 50yrs with just one change. We have always added a Red Delicious apple.

  2. I have used this recipe for 50 years, I add a few chopped pecans, I make it ahead and freeze it prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love the juice it makes, great on left over Turkey, !

  3. I love this recipe. For me Thanksgiving or Christmas Meals are not complete without it!<br/>I grew up with it as my one of my Moms regular Holiday dishes... I always remembered her complaining about how long it took to make! Well Mom did not have a Cuisinart Food Processor, only an old style blender with a "Chopping/Grinder" attachment you put on it... When I grew up and wanted to make it on my own and asked her for the recipe. She said its on the back of the Ocean Spray Cranberries... So I bought some, read them and realized that before "Food Processors," this would have been a big deal to make, Now I can do 3 batches all at once in 20 minutes or so. As an interesting addition, I now often add a little Tobasco sauce to it to give it just a hint of heat kick to the sweet! Enjoy!

  4. Classic, easy and delicious! Love it. This does need to sit for a bit for the sugar to dissolve and lose the crunchy texture.

  5. Simple and Refreshing. We make this every year. My husband likes for it to sit for a day to "muddle".

Tweaks

  1. This recipe is somewhat like my Mom's but she added an apple also and used honey instead of sugar to keep it healthy. It does take more stirring to blend, but worth it!
