Old Bisquick Streusel Coffee Cake Recipe

"This is what used to be on the Bisquick box. This old recipe is moister and has a better topping (if you like gooey crannies) than the recipe on the box now (2008). For my family this is "Grandma's coffee cake" which she makes by the yard when we are together. It is easy to double (and we often do this) and then cook in two round pans. A doubled recipe can also be cooked in a larger rectangular pan (not sure of the cooking time though - sorry)"

Questions & Replies

  1. I doubled this recipe and put in a 9x13 oblong glass pan. I just wondered if anyone knew how long to bake at 375 degrees?

  2. My mother used to make this when I was a kid, back in the '80s. Though I'm not sure if this is the exact recipe because she made the streusel topping with brown sugar. Man, that was the best part. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

  3. Has anyone tried this with bits of apple mixed in; yum, it is great!

Reviews

  1. I used 2 make this in 1992-1994 and my son loved it. Recently he asked me 2 make it for him and I couldn't remember the recipe. The Bisquick box no longer has it! Thank goodness that I found it. The recipe is so delicious and easy to make. I will make it again tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

  2. I had despaired of ever finding this recipe again. I made it as a bride in 1957 using 2 teaspoons of cardamom. Delicious. I had thought perhaps I should had a tad more shortening in the future. Doubling the topping is a good idea, and doubling the recipe for a 9x13 pan.

  3. I used to use the recipe off the box and added crushed pineapple, coconut, and pecans. The cake came out moist and delicious.

  4. Ok, so, I thought I had messed up the recipe when it turned out dry and crumbly. In reality, the recipe was changed! Thank you so much for posting this. I LOVE it! I was so disappointed with the new recipe that I thought maybe I'd used some recipe other than Bisquick and couldn't remember it. I'm glad to have my favorite coffee cake back. I cant thank you enough. This recipe is moist, and delicious.

  5. This was a Christmas morning tradition for my family. When I went out to start my own family, the recipe was lost. I am so happy to find it again, to continue the tradition with my wife and kids. We always doubled the recipe, doubled the topping accordingly, and sometimes added chopped pecans. We would also add small dollops of our favorite fruit preserves (I recommend strawberry or apricot) to the top before baking. They create these little pockets of fruity treasure in an already awesome cake. :)

Tweaks

  1. I've made a "kicked up" version of this for years. I add a teaspoon each of cinnamon, vanilla extract and nutmeg to the batter, and sub brown sugar in the topping, add chopped pecans, and double it. So great. Enjoy!

  2. 1 can crushed pineapple, 1 cup shredded coconut, 1 cup chopped pecans.
