Old Fashioned Sloppy Joes

"Like most old fashion recipes, this sloppy joe is not super spicy but is a sweet and tangy variety. Try this recipe once and you'll throw the can sauce away for good. Old Fashion Sloppy Joe can be cooked and served immediately but is even better reheated the day after."

Reviews

  1. I really hate leaving poor reviews but I followed this recipe to a tee. And there was way too much ketchup. I have looked this recipe over & over again to make sure I got it right. It calls for 1 (26 oz. bottle of ketchup), is that a misprint? Perhaps the ketchup amt. is correct & just too much for my taste.

  2. As bad as I hate to write negative reviews, I am going to have to to keep someone from wasting so much ingredients. I followed this recipe exactly as instructed except I only used 1/2 cup of brown sugar and wowza! It was over the top sweet and way to much ketchup. None of my family could eat it. I used 2 pounds of burger and I'm wondering if I cook another pound maybe it will save the dish. Wondering if they meant 3/4 of a tablespoon of brown sugar? Anyway I can't imagine anyone being able to eat this. Sorry ??

  3. this is how sloppy joes is suppose to taste. i didn't have dried mustard so i used a teaspoon of reg mustard and i thought that 3/4 c of brown sugar sounded like a little to much so i only put a heaping tablespoon in and i didn't add salt because i have high blood presure and it came out great. the whole family loved it. this recipe is now a family favorite.

  4. EXACTLY what I was looking for! We prefer a sweet tasting sloppy joe...and this was perfect! I halved everything in the recipe because I only had 1 lb of ground beef (which was 93/7). After browning the meat, I realized I only had about 8 ounces of ketchup left in the fridge instead of the 13 the recipe called for...but it still turned out perfectly!!! I also didn't add the onion or green pepper, and only had french's mustard! Must be a wonderful recipe to work with all of those changes! THANKS A TON!!

  5. I made this last nite for a quick dinner and it was great! I have to use onion powder as my DH can't eat real onions :-(. He also doesn't do peppers, so I excluded those. I used sugar free catsup and Splenda brown sugar (cutting it back to 1/4 cup) and it turned out really good. I also put a dash of cayenne pepper for just a little kick. I definitely have a new sloppy joe recipe! Thanks for posting.

Tweaks

  1. Suprisingly flavorful and very simple to make. What sets this recipe apart from other sloppy joe recipes, is the tanginess, it's the best part! I changed a few things: I used tomato sauce instead of ketchup and only used 1/4 cup brown sugar. This is a great recipe that I will definitely use again.

  2. Easy, tasty recipe. Great for a busy weeknight. As pointed out, this recipe makes a very sweet and tangy sloppy joe, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Not really what I think of when I think "sloppy joe", but I really liked it. What I did differently: left out the green pepper, added several drops of tobasco sauce, and some garlic salt. Also, I used a lot less salt than called for in the recipe, and I used 97% lean ground beef instead of chuck. I will make this again--I may experiement with adding different spices and vegetables. Thanks for the recipe!
